The set up of DAP Jelutong Parliament operations centre
The election fever struck me since the announcement of parliament dissolution and as it near the nomination date , we volunteer to the call of blogger Jeff Ooi as he will be standing as a candidate for Jelutong parliament seat.
Under the Jelutong parliament seat, there are 3 state seats namely Sungai Pinang, Batu Lancang & Datok Keramat. All these seats are under BN rule and it's going to be a tough fight to wrest these away.
The operations centre set up was at a location along the main road of Jelutong and the office set up was using a 20ft old container transported from KL.With a few tables & chair and rental of 2 canopy set up, that's it....this is what we called the mediocre "Operations Centre" for the battle of Jelutong parliament seat. Nothing compare to the other party which have much better place and of course much more workers to help.
Anyway it's is the passion on the call for the love of politics that Jeff is in the race.
Nomination Day - 24Feb08(Sun) at Penang Free School
All the nominated candidates i.e. Jeff Ooi-Jelutong parliament seat, Jagdeep Singh-Datok Keramat state seat, Koid Teng Guan-Sungai Pinang state seat & Danny Law-Batu Lancang state seat marched from caunter hall roundabout hawker centre to Penang Free school to submit their nomination form. The entourage have only about 40 supporters compare to BN which have more than 500 supporters. There was much jeering from the bigger party however it was
without any incident. Anyway it is not a matter of which party have more supporters as we shall see later..........
The Battle Begins-24Feb08 to 07Mar08-13 days of campaigning
It's was a really hectic & challenging period for all the candidates during the 13 days of campaigning and most were without good sleep and of course developing coarse & off tune voices due to the many ceramah & after ceramah to campaign for voters attention. There were 2 huge ceramah at Han Chiang school and the finale was on the 06Mar08 with more than 50,000 turn out . This is the most spectacular and probably the biggest gathering of people from all walks of life that I have witness with people gathering peacefully, singing and of course the fireworks displayed by supporters.
The D'day - Polling Day-08Mar2008
Finally after 13 days of campaign, now it is for the voters to decide whom they would want to be voted in or voted out. From the trails of campaigning, huge crowds were seen at most of DAP ceramah and could all these be translated to votes ?
At about 2100hrs, unofficial news came in that the opposition has make a clean of the seats contested and that they will be forming the new gomen.
It's is like a Tsunami of change that had swept through with the opposition of DAP,PKR & PAS bagging 29 out of 40 state seats, thus having 2/3 majority and forming the new gomen.
Thus Jeff Ooi will become the 1st blogger to be voted in parliament and all our hard efforts during the 13 days of campaigning have indeed pay well. Syabas to all the successful candidates and now with a YB title, they have a heavy burden to carry and prove to the people who have vote them in to perform to the expectation of the masses. They want change and they just change it as in politics, the impossible is now possible.
This is the team from Jelutong at Penang Free School tally centre, looking exhausted but happy waiting for the final announcement from the SPR officers
To serve the constituents of Jelutong, a service centre will be set up and hopefully this time around more volunteers would come forward to assist us as we are now on the other side of the camp now....DAP is now the gomen and I am sure it would not be difficult to look for a service centre anymore.......
